Job Summary
The Trade Data & Classification Manager is responsible for managing the daily HS Code classification and product compliance determination process across MR. DIY’s international operations.
This role ensures that product classification requests from Purchasers are properly reviewed, validated, and coordinated with Local import teams, customs brokers, global classification partners and product compliance consultants, before final confirmation is provided to support purchasing and import decisions.
The role leads the HS Code Classification Specialist team, ensuring that classifications are completed accurately, consistently and within defined SLA, while maintaining a reliable classification master database to support efficient customs clearance and post-audit readiness. The role also ensures that classification data is properly documented, analyzed, and continuously improved to enhance operational efficiency, tariff optimization and trade compliance performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. HS Code Classification Operations
Manage the end-to-end HS Code and license classification workflow for products sourced across MR. DIY markets.
Review classification requests submitted by Purchasers, ensuring product information and technical details are complete before submission to Local Import teams, Customs brokers, Global Classifiers, and Product Compliance Consultants (so called “Counterparts”).
Coordinate with Counterparts to obtain accurate classification and regulatory determination.
Liaise with country import teams and customs brokers to validate and confirm classification acceptance in respective markets.
Compile and communicate finalized HS Code classifications to Purchasers to support procurement and import planning.
2. Classification Team Leadership
Lead and develop a team of HS Code Classification Specialists.
Ensure classification tasks are completed accurately, consistently and within defined SLA.
Establish classification review mechanisms to ensure consistency across markets and product categories.
Provide guidance and technical coaching to team members to strengthen internal classification capabilities.
3. Classification Data Governance
Maintain and continuously update the HS Code Master Classification Database.
Record classification decisions together with GRI references, classification logic and supporting rationale.
Monitor actual HS Codes declared during import and identify discrepancies against the master database.
Analyze discrepancies and update classification records where necessary to ensure future consistency.
4. Vendor and Partner Management
Manage the performance of Global Classifiers and Product Compliance Consultants.
Monitor service quality, turnaround time, and classification accuracy.
Review contract terms, subscription arrangements and utilization levels of classification quotas.
Ensure optimal usage of external services and maximize ROI from outsourced classification support.
5. Regulatory Monitoring
Monitor updates and developments in the Harmonized System and product compliance regulations.
Ensure classification master data remains updated with regulatory changes.
Proactively identify potential classification risks that may affect customs clearance or post-clearance audits.
6. Operational Efficiency & Professionalization
Improve classification workflow efficiency and service quality provided to internal stakeholders.
Ensure Purchasers receive timely support and professional guidance for classification and compliance queries.
Handle classification-related requests, escalations and operational issues from business teams.
7. Digitalization & Data Management
Work with the GTPC Centre of Excellence (CoE) team to digitalize classification processes and databases.
Support development of a centralized trade data platform for HS Code management.
Contribute to building structured trade data to support automation and analytics initiatives.
8. Tariff Optimization
Analyze tariff implications of classification decisions across markets.
Support tariff optimization strategies aligned with business lifecycle and sourcing strategies.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, International Trade, Business, or related field.
5+ years’ experience in HS Code classification, customs compliance or product compliance.
Experience in retail, FMCG or high-SKU environments preferred.
Experience managing classification across multiple countries or markets.
Strong knowledge of the Harmonized System (HS) and General Rules for Interpretation (GRI).
Understanding of customs clearance processes and import declaration practices.
Familiarity with product regulatory requirements is an advantage.
Strong analytical and data management capability.
Excellent stakeholder communication.
Ability to manage operational workflows and SLA.
